Best Buy'er BewareBest Buy and Microsoft are named in a lawsuit initiated by a California man who claims to have been duped into MSN service at the checkout counter. He was handed the computer and a "trial" CD for MSN, which isn't unexpected in the least, but what was unique is that the CD was scanned by the clerk. There's no valid reason to scan a trial CD because the point of a true trial edition is to shove as many out the door as possible. Keeping track of them for inventory purposes, as claimed by Best Buy is ludicrous. As you've probably guessed by now, zapping the CD with the little laser blaster initiated a monthly charge to the debit card used to purchase the computer. When confronted, neither company offered a satisfactory refund, hence the lawsuit.

Cookie Monster made computing history 30 years ago..The modern personal computer came to life three decades ago this month when a group of Xerox Corp. engineers projected an image of Cookie Monster, the "Sesame Street" character, onto the screen of an unfinished machine known as the Alto.
It is refreshing to see that the 'personal computer' project was a renegade 'secret' project that was kept alive by researchers when the manager was out on leave.

President exempts Area 51 again
Interesting story.. you know, they just can't help looking bad. Quote: "On Dec. 24, the White House issued a September determination by Mr. Bush in which he followed his predecessors' lead by issuing a determination exempting the Air Force facility near Groom Lake, Nevada, from environmental laws allowing the release of classified information about the area.

Groom Lake is the place that UFO buffs call Area 51.

"I find that it is in the paramount interest of the United States to exempt the United States Air Force's operating location near Groom Lake … from any applicable requirement for the disclosure to unauthorized persons of classified information concerning that operating location," the president wrote"

To the moon, Alice!"Long imagined by science-fiction writers but seen by others as hopelessly far-fetched, the space-elevator concept has advanced dramatically in recent years along with leaps forward in the design of carbon nanotubes. Using the lightweight, strong carbon material, it's feasible to talk of building a meter-wide "ribbon" that would start on a mobile ocean platform at the equator, west of Ecuador, and extend 62,000 miles up into space."
